Normal advice is always to apply waterslide transfers onto a gloss surface. Varnish afterwards to get the desired finish.
Doing what you have done is next but one on my list of projects so I'm curious to learn from your experiences. A quick look on the net suggested that the use of Microset is highly recommended and may well help.

I've not used this so can't give any personal advice (yet) - the only custom lettering I've had made was done as dry print transfers by 4D Model Shop http://modelshop.co.uk/.

I have had some success applying these onto mat finish by applying a coat of Microsol under and over the transfer. The biggest problem is leeching of the ink at the edges where the water/microsol gets under the varnish.

Sorry I did not realize that I had posted on this thread so long ago.
It does work and on mat surfaces and Microsol does work,what are you guys doing wrong?? I have, as I said previously, made transfers on an ink jet printer using clear Crafty Decal paper and applied them successfully.
I lettered a furniture container which was done this way AND using two layers of clear paper to get the shading effect. If anybody would like to see it in real life you will need to attend Cardiff Exhibition on 15/16th and it will be there !!!!!!
I have also used Microsol to fix/set Archers Resin Rivets to Nickel Silver and found that it stuck so hard that it needed to be removed with a fibre glass brush. If anybody would like to see it then................15/16th and it will be there !!!!!
