Rhymney (and Cardiff Railway) Covered Goods - Type 1

Any one who has followed me on RMWeb may have seen that I'm modelling Rhymney vans. So far have had a 4mm scale body 3D printed which I intend to use as a master for resin casting. I've also been working on an etched brass chassis but haven't revealed it to the world yet.

The main design of Rhymney covered goods was built in 6 batches. One batch from Metropolitan Wagon Co. in 1891, 4 batches from Harrison & Camm in 1899, 1900, 1902 & 1904 and finally the Rhymney built 35 themselves between 1903 & 1912. I've called these batches A to F. So far I have either a drawing or photo of each of these batches except batch D, numbers 806 - 830. Has anyone got a drawing or photo of this batch please?

It appears that the Cardiff Railway had some vans to the same basic design which it should be possible to model from the resin bodies and brass chassis.

PS I do intend to make 'kits' available in 4mm and possibly in 7mm (but I might need the help of a 7mm modeller to revise the chassis etch).

Yes they do require an etched chassis. Neither Bachmann or Hornby do a suitable chassis. The nearest is the Bachmann PO chassis which is too long, has the wrong brake gear and wrong axleboxes.

There were at least 3 chassis and I'm trying to do all 3 on one drawing! Single side lever, double side lever & GWR cross-corner DC1 - which is the one that is doing my head in.

100 resin bodies?!! Ouch. I will have to get a quote. I was hoping that 25 might be cost effective. Otherwise it will be back to the drawing board.

Came across this picture yesterday at Kidderminser.
They are for Baldwins LTD, Kings dock works, Swansea they look very much like the ones built for the Cardiff Railway by Gloucester C & W.

I'm struggling with the etch. Being a P4 modeller I want to include a reasonable representation of the brake gear. I also saw Bill Bedford at Scalefour North and he gave me a few ideas about getting a finer finish than is available straight from the printers. It involves splitting the 3D print into a couple of pieces, finishing them and then joining back together.

Plus I'm juggling several other projects (including Rhymney A/A1 loco, a couple of ADR projects and my scalefour area group layout) which will more than likely all come together at the same time.
