I’m in the process of putting together an article for October’s Archive on the rebuilding of Pontypridd station 1908-1914 and am trying to work out what the different platforms were used for. As I understand it:
Platform 1 was the Up Main for trains to Merthyr;
Platform 4 was used for trains to Aberdare, Nelson & Llancaiach and Ynysbwl;
Platform 6 was the Down Main for trains to Cardiff; and
Platform 7 was used for trains to Llantrisant and Cowbridge.
This leaves me with platforms 2, 3 and 5.
On Wikipedia, always reliable, it states that both platforms 3 and 4 were used to terminate trains from Aberdare, Nelson & Llancaiach and Ynysbwyl. However if my reading of RA Cooke's Section 46B is correct, this would not have been possible until 1928 when the line from platform 3 to the Rhondda branch was removed and a point connecting platform 3 to the platform 4 line was added. In any event, Cooke notes platform 3 as having become a siding.
Therefore in Taff Vale days, I am wondering whether Rhondda Valley passenger services terminated at Pontypridd in which case platforms 2, 3 and 5 would serve that purpose. In which case, was platform 2 for Rhondda Fawr trains and platform 3 for the Rhondda Fach? Also was platform 5 used to terminate services coming from the Down Main?
Any knowledge or references on this would be much appreciated.
