Powlesland and Mason Locomotives

A few weeks ago I bought a copy of 928 with the P&M No.14 plate still fitted. It is sitting with Royal Mail in my local delivery office waiting for my return from an extended holiday in warmer climes. I’ll scan and post a copy here next week. It may be the same photo to which you refer - I neglected to bring my bound RCTS volumes with me as holiday reading!

The photo that I purchased is the same as that published in the RCTS Locomotives of the GWR Part 10. However it allows the detail to be more easily seen. My photo states copyright of the Ken Nunn Collection no. 44039 and is reproduced here as fair use. The published photo has an incorrect location.

The loco, still clearly sporting its P & M No. 14 plate on 12th August 1924, is standing on Oystermouth Road and facing the entrance to Swansea Gas Works on the left. Visible in the distance below the street light is the LNWR Goods Shed at Victoria. The loco has just crossed the Mumbles Railway tracks visible to the right of the cyclists. It had also passed under the tracks to Victoria station and the goods and carriage sheds. These tracks were carried on an embankment.
If you stood where the loco is standing but facing the embankment in April 1960, you would have this view.

The Mumbles Railway is being lifted (there was a passing loop at this point) and the siding to the gasworks which passed through the arch has already been lifted.
