When did RR signal arms stop having 2 white stripes on the front and 2 black stripes on the back? There is a 1913 photo in the RR Drawings book that shows the back of one signal with 2 stripes, but other signals that are further away appear to only have 1 stripe. Of the arms in the attached photo only 1 might have 2 stripes.

Did the Rhymney ever use lattice posts? This 1950s photo shows a lattice post behind the autocoach at Penrhos. I can't establish if the GWR put a new post here or was it the Rhymney?

I would agree - the reproduction in Hutton's book on the ADR is clearer.

The letter from P. Tatlow in Journal of the HMRS vol 7 no 5 page 111 may be of interest.

The few clear photos I have of signals in RR days give me the impression that a change was made from single stripe to double stripes (only for somersault signals) rather than the other way round: I wouldn't care to hazard a guess of date for a change.

Concrete ! So GWR not Rhymney. Apparently the GWR installed over 100 concrete signal posts between 1918 and 1928, many in S Wales.- Great Western Echo — No.89. Spring 1985 pp.7-11
