Barry H class

Post by Wagonworks_andy »

Derek Mundy is building a 7mm model of a Barry H class, specifically Number 84. It is pictured on page 58 of the Circles’ Barry Railways drawings book. The photo shows a pipe running along the valance, from a fitting near the cab footsteps on the fireman’s side, to a manifold just to the rear of the motion bracket. It is the only photo Derek has found to show this, though there is a similar fitting on a B1 in a photo in Mountfords’ book from Oakwood press. The question is, was this an exhaust steam pipe to feed the injector or was it for another purpose?

This picture illustrates the pipe in question.

Looking at a photo of a K class in its original condition, I would guess that the speculation about the pipe being for an injector may well be correct.

I'm not sure if the Circle has a GA of the Barry H but the HMRS appears to have one for the very similar PTR loco - perhaps that shows the fitting in detail (I've not seen a photo of the left side of the PTR loco so I'm not sure the fitting was present).

The same image can be found at:

but I am not sure if it helps.
I have looked through all my photos of the PTR version of these locomotives, and none show a pipe anything like that on the Barry engine.

I thought I had a GA drawing of the Class H but apparently not. York has a database of all the GA drawings it holds of locomotives. Does anyone know where to find it?

The topic came up at a Zoom meeting of the Newport MRS yesterday evening and it was confirmed that the pipe was indeed for an exhaust injector. One person took the trouble to consult part 10 of the RCTS Locos of the GWR and found relevant details around the fitting and removal of them.
