Sir Edward Watkin - Victoria's Railway King (talk)

Post by RichardHC »

This evening at 7.30pm the Railway & Canal Historical Society will be giving Zoom talk on Sir Edward Watkin who was known as the 'Second Railway King' and had railway interests throughout the UK such as the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (later the Great Central Railway) as well as projects in Canada. The speaker, Geoff Scargill, also deals with his other major projects; the aborted channel tunnel of 1880, the copy of the Eiffel Tower that became Wembley Stadium, his leadership of the campaign to provide the first Parks for the People in Manchester and Salford. He concludes with the inside story of the mystery of a lost masterpiece. A few of his projects extended into Wales.

All are welcome to the talk. See the website which provides the link to the meeting:

If you are interested in the life and work of Sir Edward Watkin there is a 'Watkin Society' which was formed in 2019. Details can be found on their website:

There is also a book about Sir Edward Watkin by Geoff Scargill published by Pen & Sword books due out at the end of March. These are the details:

It seems that it can be 'pre-ordered' now at a significant discount on the cover price.
