I was recently given a small collection of luggage labels from the Taff Vale Railway. One was for a journey from Llwynypia to Newcastle Emlyn via Treherbert. I found this quite surprising that there were sufficient people travelling on this journey to justify printing a luggage label. Another seemingly odd journey was from Mountain Ash to Llanidloes via Merthyr.
Can anyone explain how luggage labels were printed? Did the Taff Vale Railway have its own printing department or was this work sent out to local printers? What sort of stocks of labels did stations have and how many would be printed for each destination? The above examples suggest that stations must have held a huge range of destinations. Did some stations have a facility for printing their own labels?
