Barry Station

Post by Rhobat Bryn »

Does anyone know or know where I can find out the lengths of the platforms at Barry circa 1922?

A good source is the set of GWR Station Diagrams produced in the 1920s. These cover the whole of the enlarged GWR by operating division, and give platform and loading bank lengths, running loop lengths, and siding capacities. A parallel series of Running Line Diagrams gives gradients and distances. I imagine Barry would be in the Cardiff Division files. Unfortunately, the only place I am aware of that has all these is the National Archives at Kew, RAIL 253/395 and 253/396 respectively, although some members may have copies of individual pages. I have them for the PTR, SWMR and R&SBR, none of which are of much help to you. You could try a request in the Newsletter.
Failing that, all I can suggest is scaling from the edition of the 25in OS nearest to your date of interest. The local record office should have a full set, or you try online at the National Library of Scotland, https://maps.nls.uk/os/, free if they have the desired map, or old-maps.co.uk, https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/, probable fee for required scale.
