When these locos were rebuilt by the GWR, did they retain their original tanks ?

Also, I understand they were fitted from new with screw reversers - if so were these retained after the rebuild ?

When rebuilt with a standard 10 boiler they kept their Rhymney tanks. But the cabs and bunkers were altered. The tanks received Splash Plates to stop water/feet going between the tanks and boiler. The GW also added Tank Ties to stop the tanks spreading at the top.

There's a good drawing in Russell's GWR Absorbed Engines that shows a std10 boiler and all the other mods that were done. I suggest you scan it at maximum resolution and print out as big as you can to read all of the text and dimensions.

PS. The Splash Plates where both on top of the tanks and on the front of the tanks. Which gives the impression of the tanks being replaced or enlarged.

PPS. I hadn't realised that they had a screw reverser, but now I look I can see it was retained on GWR drawing.
