Stations in Swansea North, Era: Early 1900's

Post by TheObserver »

I hope that this is the correct forum for an enquiry of this nature.

Whilst browsing maps of the early 1900's on Old-Maps.co.uk (link) I came across a number of stations and halts which I would like some help with identifying:
  • On the 1942 OS 1:2500 map there is a station (halt) shown close to Martin Street, Morriston: (see here), which is not shown on the 1917, 1:2500 series map. How can I find out if this might have been built and opened in the first quarter of the 1900's?

On the 1899, OS 1:2500 map there is a station shown on Neath Road, Plas-Marl (see here) How can I find out what the formal name of this station was?

On the 1919 OS 1:2500 map at this location can be seen a station, Could this be the station I have heard referred to as 'Landor Station'?

With regards your first station, it is most likely to be Copper Pit Platform (GWR). According to Quick, it first appeared in Bradshaws in February 1915 and closed on 11th June 1956.

The second station you refer to is Plas Marl (GWR) and was opened on 9th May 1881 and closed on 11th June 1956. The reference can be found in Quick's chronology.

The third station you refer to is Landore Low Level which was a Great Western station and opened on 9th May 1881 and closed on 2nd November 1964.

There have been a number of occasions in the two years since I made the original post in this thread, when I have come across references to "Quick".

I am guessing that is the authors name of a publication of railway history.

Could one of you please expand the appropriate details, so that I might either attempt to purchase a copy or attempt a search for a loan copy through the local library service.

Unfortunately Quick's Chronology is out of print and it may be difficult to get one on the second-hand book market. However, keep an eye on the website http://www.bookfinder.com. (Earlier versions of the book are available here.) You could also try http://www.eBay.co.uk.
However on the Railway & Canal Historical Society website there is a section on Quick's Chronology which includes 5 supplements updating information in the original volume. These may be downloaded free of charge. See:

I know this is a bit after the event, but I noticed an error in Rhobat Bryn's reply, above. The date given for the closure of Landore (Low Level) is, in fact, that of the high-level station (Landore Junction as was at one time). Landore (Low Level) did not even survive until the closure of the Morriston branch on 11 June 1956, it closed on 4 January 1954. It was apparently very little used, the high level station being slightly better situated for the community and, in any case, the parallel bus service was far more frequent.

Never too late to be corrected, Alan. You're absolutely right. Landore LL did indeed close on 4th January 1954. Many thanks for taking the time to set the record straight.

The printed edition of Michael Quick's Railway Passenger Stations in GB... 4th edition has been replaced by an electronic only 5th edition and the 2021 updated version 5.03 is now available to view and download from https://rchs.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/ ... .-5.03.pdf. There is no point in buying second-hand copies of the print edition for it has been so extensively overtaken by the online version.
