Brake van centre tail lamps

Some vans had a tail lamp that shone through the end planking like this TVR one:
As I wish to make a model of a van with such a feature I've been looking at some drawings, a typical one shows:
What is shown in this plan view? There's nothing visible in the end or side elevations in several different drawings of TVR and RR vans that I've examined.
At one time I wondered if the lamp were within a box of some sort but this poor photo would indicate otherwise: I find it difficult to imagine that the lamp were simply placed on the floor as this would not really be safe. These days one would worry about someone tripping over it but in the 19th century I suspect the concern would be that a careless brakesman could kick it so that it would not be visible at the tail of the train.
Does anyone have any extra information?
