TPO Vans

On page 151 of Peter Johnson's recent book on the history of the Cambrian Railway there is an excellent image of the TPO van 293. Looking at the photograph under a magnifying glass the panelling above the waist line does not have any apparent depth and is just lining on an otherwise flat surface. Can anyone confirm ?
