Steam Railway is reporting that the above locomotive is receiving a cosmetic overhaul which should be ready for display in time for the opening of the Gwili Railway extension to Abergwili Junction in May 2014.

Are there any plans for a functional restoration?

The only mention of that in the article is the sentence, "The group aims to return the engine to steam later."

There is mention of making donations to a Welsh Train Project, which I believe is to include 28 and three Taff Vale carriages, so presumably the answer to your question will depend on the level of contributions received.

Eighteen months since the last post and being bottom of the list is worth a 'Bump'.

Whilst browsing another story on the National Railway Museum website, I spotted this item concerning Taff Vale Railway No. 28.

I trust others might find the item of interest:

Many thanks for sharing these photos. I think it's more than a shame that the loco has been done out in Great Western livery, given it only spent 4 years of its life in those colours. I understand that it was felt that a GW livery was easier to achieve than a Taff Vale one given that there were time constraints. We can only hope that, when time permits, it will be restored to its Taff Vale condition. It's not as if there's a shortage of locomotives in GW livery.
