Cardiff goods depots

GWR GM's circular no. 2917 of 18 June 1924 says that the "Station" "Cardiff Docks" (formerly Rhymney Rly.) was to be known from 1 July as "Cardiff East Dock".

Likewise, "Station" "Cardiff Canton Sidings" (formerly TVR) was to be known from the same date as "Cardiff Canton Sidings (Leckwith Road)". n.b. do not confuse this with the GWR's Canton goods facility, Eldon Road, later Ninian Park Road.

Were there actually public goods depot (or mileage siding) facilities at both these places? If so, when did they (respectively) close? I can't find anything equating to either in the 1956 Hand-book of Stations.

In my copy of the 1956 Handbook of Stations there is an entry "Canton Sdgs. (Leckwith Road) (Public)". This is under Canton not Cardiff. It also appears under Grangetown. I can''t help at the moment with the East Docks query.

Well spotted about Canton!

By the way, can anyone say when the other Canton goods facility (ex-GWR) - Eldon Road (although the highway was Eldon Street) - was renamed Ninian Park Road. The highway seems to have been renamed after WW2.

Whilst I can't help with any of the dates, I wonder if as an aside it might help if you were to follow the Ordnance Survey recording of these locations?

Clicking on the link below should take you to the National Library of Scotland, index of "Six inch maps, 1842-1952", and by selecting an individual map from the right hand column (say the second one down) brings to screen the 1898/1899 Revision which when zooming into the lower right corner, shows the Eldon Street area as the Ordnance Survey recorded it:

Comparison of the National Library of Scotland's on-line collection of old OS maps (to which you draw attention) is exactly where I obtained the information about the road's change of name: the NLS is always a first port of call when pursuing such enquiries and I commend it to readers.
