A Southern Railway label for Fruit by Passenger train has recently been posted on an online auction site.
The wording includes "To Swansea" - " Proper Transfer" via Salisbury & G.W. Rly.
I am puzzled by the reference to "Proper Transfer" and would be grateful if any member can offer an explanation.

Hi,
I would imagine it has to do with using appropriate wagons/ and transport in a timely manner along the stated route.
Equally it might in part refer to transfer between the different railway companies needed on the whole journey. This was a whole other process at the time when broad and standard gauge existed as complementary systems.
Please see some links below which might help. The Hansard reference dates from 1922 by which point the answer indicates that there were a set of rules in place.
