I have recently obtained a photo which is stated to be Pant (B&M) station. I do not know the origin of the photograph. The location of the saddle tank in the centre of the picture intrigues me as it appears contrary to the signals and there is no sign of hand signalling taking place. Can anyone say what is happening?

I'm pretty sure that is from the Ken Nunn collection.

What I understand to be happening is that the nearer engine, either 17 or 18, has drawn the empty passenger train from the Dowlais branch platform (which is on a lower level to the right of the platform where the train is standing) a short distance northwards towards Pontsticill and propelled it into the main line up platform and is in the process of running around. After 17/18 couples to the train it will propel and then draw it into the Dowlais branch platform ready for the next service to Dowlais. The goods train, which is being hauled by a No1 class saddle tank can then proceed.

As regards signalling I don't know what the arrangements were, but the signal box was to the right of the pass train behind the photographer, so any hand signalling would not be visible in this view.

I hope others may be able to correct me or add further info.

Thank you Rod. What you say makes sense. I think that I was thrown by the proximity of the goods train. There must be enough room beyond the set of points at the end of the loop, and the two locos will be protected by the thickness of the signal post.
