In the late 18th and early 19th century Merthyr was the largest town in Wales and with four ironworks was the centre of the Welsh iron industry. The last and smallest of the ironworks was at Penydarren which was established by the Homfray family from Staffordshire. This brief biography concentrates on Samuel Homfray’s work in the iron industry rather than his family life but he was also a principal promoter of the Glamorganshire Canal and was instrumental in bring Richard Trevithick to South Wales for a trial of his newly-invented steam engine to work on the Merthyr Tramroad. The book is well illustrated and includes a very clear diagram and explanation of the iron making process as well as a useful bibliography.
