Sir Edward Watkin - Victoria's Railway King (talk)

This evening at 7.30pm the Railway & Canal Historical Society will be giving Zoom talk on Sir Edward Watkin who was known as the 'Second Railway King' and had railway interests throughout the UK such as the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (later the Great Central Railway) as well as projects in Canada. The speaker, Geoff Scargill, also deals with his other major projects; the aborted channel tunnel of 1880, the copy of the Eiffel Tower that became Wembley Stadium, his leadership of the campaign to provide the first Parks for the People in Manchester and Salford. He concludes with the inside story of the mystery of a lost masterpiece. A few of his projects extended into Wales.
