Many thanks for the photo, Robin. Tony M very kindly sent me the same picture but your copy is a a much sharper version. They were manufactured by the Midland Carriage & Wagon Co in 1915 and so would have been 21 years old at the time of the picture.

Thanks also for identifying the numbers. This represents the last stage in nailing down the three liveries which were used by the three companies who owned them at different stages in their operational life.

Many thanks to all for your support and willingness to share your knowledge.

Hi Rhobat. The attached picture may help. Taken at Barry on 4th October 1936 (Sunday).
In the background are a number of ex Barry Railway six wheeled brake vans in GWR livery.
I have been able to identify these three vans:
No.35981 Barry
No.35971 Cadoxton
No.35993 Barry
Hi Andy

I owe you an apology Andy as I inadvertently thanked Robin for your excellent and extremely helpful photograph. I can only apologise for my apparent act of ingratitude. I cannot tell you how helpful this photograph has been as it has enabled me to close the file on the van's liveries. Many thanks for taking the time to share this.
