The Tom Hurry Riches collection gives us a wide view of the state of the art in one particular sector. Hurry Riches was born in 1846 and spent almost all his working life in the service of the Taff Vale Railway (TVR). By the time he became President of the IMechE for 1907-1908, he had been Locomotive Superintendent of the TVR for 34 years. He remained in that role until he died in 1911, becoming the longest-serving person in that job (or its equivalent) in a major railway in UK history. For his Presidential Address, Hurry Riches compiled a set of pictures “illustrating the locomotives and rolling-stock of the railways of Great Britain (which have been reproduced from photographs etc. kindly supplied me by my friends, the locomotive, carriage, and wagon superintendents), I am enabled to show today’s practice in this country.”
