This year’s Clinker Memorial Lecture will be held at the Mechanics Conference Centre, 103 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6DD on Saturday, 29th October 2022 commencing at 2pm. The title of the lecture which will be delivered by Dr Michael R Bailey MBE is “Built in Britain: The Independent Locomotive Manufacturing Industry in the Nineteenth Century”. The meeting is free of charge and is open to all. The meeting will not be broadcast live but a recording will be available on the RCHS website shortly after the lecture.

Britain's role as the instigator of the main line and industrial railway was dependent upon the support of a new locomotive manufacturing industry. The number of companies grew rapidly as the demands of the railway companies escalated with the growth of traffic. Dr. Bailey will outline the progress, successes and failures of the industry which dominated the world provision for locomotives for much of the nineteenth century. The topics will include the growth of the world market, methods of marketing and selling, progress with design, materials and manufacturing, provision of manpower and industrial relations, and progressive understanding of administrative processes to sustain profitability and development.
Michael Bailey has spent a career in transport management. Over the past thirty years, as a Consultant to transport and railway museums in the UK and overseas, he has undertaken several studies of early locomotive history, including archaeological studies of some of the world's earliest surviving examples. He is a past-President of the Newcomen Society for the Study of the History of Engineering & Technology, and is now the President of both the Stephenson Locomotive Society and the British Overseas Railways Historical Trust. He is the author of many books and published papers on early locomotive history and the engineers associated with it.
All interested in this important period in British industrial history are invited to attend this free event.
The lecture is named after Charles Ralph Clinker (1906 – 1983)
Charles Clinker was a railway historian and chronologer who worked for the Great Western Railway from 1923 to 1946. He wrote many articles on railways for magazines and produced a number of historical monographs particularly those focussed early railways such as ‘The Leicester & Swannington Railway’, ‘The Hay Railway’ and ‘Early Railways between Abergavenny and Hereford’. His ‘Register of Closed Passenger and Goods stations in England, Scotland and Wales’ was a pioneering work of railway chronology but has perhaps been superceded by later works following additional research. He was responsible for amassing the Locomotive & General Railway Photographic Collection now held by the National Railway Museum. He also conducted public lecture programmes on railway history. His underlying philosophy of historical research was to use original source materials and strive for accuracy.
Charles Clinker was one of the six founding members of the Railway & Canal Historical Society which was established at Preston in 1954. An article by him in ‘The Amateur Historian’ for December/January 1956 sets out his views on the purpose of the Society which is still valid today.
