Old-Maps websiite closing

The following notice appeared recently on the Old-Maps website.

As of 31st October 2021, the www.old-maps.co.uk service will be closing permanently.
All orders placed prior to the 31st October will be processed as usual.
No new subscriptions will be accepted. All existing subscriptions will complete until the next payment date.

Cartophiles need to move quickly. If anyone discovers an acceptable alternative, other than https://maps.nls.uk/os/, please let us all know.

Hello,

Vision of Britain, https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/ , has an excellent series of maps including the OS Sanitary District maps which include civil parish boundaries. Maps can be downloaded as PDFs and its free. There is lots of other information on the site as well.

They include railways but no roads or topographical features. The project is something to do with the University of Portsmouth.

The Vision of Britain mapping website is working at present but it does not seem to include the all important large scale OS maps that were available on the Old Maps website. While many of these can be viewed on the NLS site, these are mainly for the period up to WW2 meaning the main shortfall is with those of post-war date, which of course are important given the amount of change then occurring. I do feel the genealogy sites such as Ancestry and Find My Past are missing a trick by not including historical mapping as part of their offer.

The National Library of Scotland Georeferenced Maps has a number of very useful maps, and they are free to browse.
