South Wales Coal Annual

Does any member have or have ready access to a full set of the South Wales Coal Annual?
I ask because I am looking for the monthly coal shipments from Milford in terms of foreign cargo and bunkers, and coastwise cargo and bunkers.
I know the BL and GRO have sets, and possibly also the NWMS and WGAS, but all these are off limits for the foreseeable future.
I have the Annuals for 1903, 04, 08, 15, 19, 23, 25, 26, 30 and 37, and thus data for 1903, 06, 07, 12, 13, 14, 17, 21, 23, 24, 25, 29 and 36.
Any help in filling in the gaps would be much appreciated.

I'm afraid I can't help you with your request but I'm curious as to where you have been able to purchase previous annuals. The first copy you have is 1903. Was the annual published before that date?

The SWCA was published annually from 1903 to 1937. Second hand copies are hard to come by and likely to be expensive, although there have been some modern reprints. By far the best place to look for copies is Bookfinder, www.bookfinder.com, which searches every online bookseller worldwide, including ABE and eBay.

I recently purchased a 1907 edition of the South Wales Coal Annual and was surprised that under the section on Monthly Shipment of Coal in 1906, there are figures for Cardiff, Newport, Port Talbot, Briton Ferry, Swansea, Llanelli and Milford but none for Barry. Can anyone explain this?

You have pointed out one of the deficiencies of the SWCA. The data for Barry, and for that matter Penarth, is included with that for Cardiff. This seems to be case for all years but the earliest I have seen a specific notice to that effect is the 1926 annual which states, p. 163, “In all cases Cardiff means the “Port of Cardiff” and includes Penarth and Barry.” This is of not much help if one is interested in the individual ports, and you would then need to find the raw data which might well be available in local record offices.
I have noted that you have acquired the 1907 annual; could I trouble you for the 1905 and maybe earlier data it should contain for Milford as per my original posting? Please reply privately if you prefer.

Most of the data is for 1906 rather than 1905.
