Railway Staff records

Hi, Graham/Pembrokelad,

Appreciate that your (relevant to me) post on staff was in 2013, but as a newbie, I am trying to (a) understand how WRRC Forum works...., and (b) find out whether there are searchable (preferably online) resources relating to Taff Vale Railway staff during the period ~1880-1930., My interest is that my grandfather, father and at least one uncle all worked for TVR during that period. Names were Henry, Hadyn and Harry Phillips. Hadyn was my father and is recorded in the 1911 Census as an Office Boy, the other roles were as drivers. Harry went on to become a Train-driver Instructor at Leamington Spa on diesels ~ 1950's. If you can point me to any resources that would be a great help. I live near Pembroke (well Carmarthen actually), and can get to Rhwderin when it's open. All the best Phil P

Hi Philp,
Sorry for getting back before now, I have been busy doing a lot of other items and have only just got back into the forum.
Although I have records, mine are not indexed as such. When you consider that there are 28250 footplate men listed (from 1841 to 1941 - when my records finish) then it is a big thing. However, if you can give me ideas of DoB etc and where they lived then I may be able to get some information for you.

Sorry I missed your Feb 2021 reply until now - but any help welcome, so thank you in advance:

My primary objective is to fix some dates in my father's biography - sadly he passed decades ago so registers , etc are the only hope for facts.

Father was Haydn Llewellyn Phillips (born 1896 in St Brides Wentloog, Newport, a spit and a cough from Rhwyderin). He passed away in 1965.

He grew up in Roath, Cardiff, but by the time he joined TVR he was 15 and probably in Porth, as his father Henry James Phillips, was there, I believe in charge of the shed after years as a Driver for TVR. Haydn was recorded as an office boy , living in Treherbet in 1911 and I did manage to see the original Register for his appointment. What I am trying to establish is: a. how long he stayed with TVR, and in what role(s). and b. whether he got called up for WW1 - there is no record or family knowledge of that period. The Rail records might resolve that part of the mystery; we know he got married in 1922 and he and his wife were both accomplished cellists so it is likely he left TVR around that event. He then "disappears from public records" until the 1939 Census tho some newspapers have references to someone of his name there is insufficient data to confirm it was my father they refer to.

The other two main family members with TVR association are Haydn's father Henry James Phillips ( B 1866, D 1938 in Rhwbina, Cardiff) and his brother Harry Phillips (B 1913, D 2002) who went to Leamington as an instructor driver in the early 50's. Harry's son Richard is still alive so has relevant family history for him.

Hope that gives you something to go on or to give me pointers as to where to look.
