Locomotive drawings
I'm looking at locomotive drawings for the Hurry Riches Rhymney locos. The problem is I have drawings by TL Jones, I Beattie, CJ Freezer and GWR drawing office. Not surprisingly I'm having difficulty getting them to tie-up. Does anyone know if any of the draftsmen had access to original makers drawings? So far the only drawings I've decided I can trust are the GWR drawing office drawings that are GAs for fitting standard boilers which is not much help as I want the locos in their original condition.

Re: Locomotive drawings
Jones: A, P, AP, M, R; RR classes. R, P/P1, AP, A/A1; GWR rebuilt drawings. As reproduced (poorly in some cases) in the RR Drawings book. Fortunately I also have them all from MRC as well.
RCTS: MA class
Freezer: A1 class
Beattie: R, A1; RR built. AP GWR rebuilt
GWR diagrams: A1, A, M, R, AR, P, P1, AP; RR built. R, AP, GWR rebuilt
GWR GAs: A/A1 rebuilt, AP/P rebuilt
Robert Stephenson: A1 set of 127 drawings, R class 1908 boiler outline
My real question is who had access to original drawings? Which drawing is correct? eg: ‘Beattie’ vs ‘Jones’ for the R class. ‘Freezer’ vs’ Jones’ vs ‘Beattie’ for the A/A1 class? I’m treating all of the drawings except the GWR GAs and RS construction set as may contain errors.
I'm not looking for any particular drawing apart from the Holy Grail of RR loco drawings; a pair of accurate drawings of the RR R and AR classes so the true differences can be discerned. Maybe the GWR diagrams are the most reliable in this area? Beattie, in RM 12/1985, says "The 1921 engines were all identical to their earlier classmates excepting extended frames forward of the leading coupled axle and thus rather heavier - externally they were distinguished by leading sandboxes slung under instead of atop the running plates." The different frames are generally not mentioned elsewhere.
PS I’m not interested in the S/S1 class as they rarely left the docks.

Re: Locomotive drawings
The NRM have manufacturers drawings for at least 3 types of the RR 0-6-2T engines; each of these are rolls of 100 plus large (A0 ish in modern language - not reallY!) size linen drawings of the manufacturers/RR - we came across them earlier in the year in the task of catoging the Swindon Loco and Carriage diagrams - to my mind they (GWR) retained a surprising amount of pre-grouping stuff. The lists cataloging each sheet of these are not yet in the NRM catalogues I guess but Ivor Lewis of the HMRS/GWSG/GWS may well have access. If you can wait until the middle of Jan I am at the NRM again and could look up the reference. They are quite heavy rolls! Originally we were just going to catalogue each of the rolls as one item, but we wanted more detail, especially in my case the similar TVR Class A roll!
Hope this helps?

Re: Locomotive drawings
Thanks Basil,
I went to York in July 2013 (is it really that long ago when I started looking to do just the RR A1?) and copied what I thought then was enough of the 122 drawings of the A1 class. At that time I also got an early edition of your brilliant work. I have a list of 14 different rolls that I want to look at of Rhymney loco drawings and I will also be visiting York in the new year.
