Barry railway branches

Am I correct in assuming that the viaducts which stretched to and beyond Caerffili (Walnut Tree and Llanbradach) never carried regular passenger trains (apart from bank holiday and similar specials), and that Barry Railway passenger trains only ran as far as that company's station in Pontypridd (in other words, the goods extension opposite Hopkinstown never carried passengers?)
My checking on the OS 1:25000 maps seems to show that no part of and of the northern extensions of the Barry Rwy could be utilised by the Metro (assuming we get it),

There were never any scheduled services on the Brecon & Merthyr branch of the Barry Railway though it did carry excursion trains.

There were regular passenger services from Barry to Porth in the Rhondda. The service that terminated at Pontypridd (BR) was the one from Cardiff Clarence Road that ran over GW rails as far as St Fagans and then joined the Barry main line, the reason being that the Taff Vale did not want direct competition with its service to Cardiff Queen Street.

I assume that by northern section, you mean the main line from Cadoxton to Porth. A good portion of the line from Culverhouse Cross to Cardiff West service station has already been built on by the A4232 dual carriageway. And there is very little demand these days for a service connecting the Rhondda to Barry. There is however talk of Creigiau station being part of the new Metro but it would follow the old Taff Vale freight line into Cardiff via Fairwater.

Upto the closure of the line in 1962, Barry Island Sunday School excursion trains ran from Fochriw and went over the Walnut Tree viaduct, branching off the Rhymney/Cardiff section of line just south of Llanbradach were the 12 carriage train took on and dropped off its 57XX banker to help with the mostly 1:40 crawl from Deri to Fochriw. The train was so long that it could not be accommodated in the passing loop in the station and special procedures had to be adopted to enable the Brecon to Newport service to gain access to the down platform, since the carriages extended over the southern loop points thus occupying the Fochriw to Deri section. Once the Newport service was at the down platform the excursion carriages were moved so that they and the lead engine(s) occupied the northern loop points thus clearing the route for the Newport service to proceed. Once that was completed the whole train was moved above the northern points so that it could then occupy the Down platform. Now here is a question that the more knowledgeable members in engine movements can answer. I cannot recall if there was an engine at either end of the rake or two at the front, so in either case, how did the two engines arrive at the front of the rake for the journey south?
