Blue Plaque

Postby RichardHC » Thu Feb 12, 2015 10:01 am

I have just received this snippet of information:

'The John Ewington blue plaque is to be unveiled at Abercynon station at 11.45am on Saturday 21st February. This will be an outdoor event. It ties into the Trevithick Day celebrations, which will start in Pentrebach in Merthyr, go to the Navigation in Abercynon for a short speech at 11.30 and then a short speech and blue plaque unveiling at Abercynon station at 11.45.'

John Ewington was a signalman at Abercynon on the Taff Vale Railway. His trade union activities with the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants led to him being (allegedly) victimised by the company and his treatment led to the Taff Vale strike of 1900. The consequences of the strike were far reaching in terms of Trade Union law and the foundation of the Labour Party.

The note mentions Trevithick Day celebrations but I have no other information about these. Does anyone else know what is happening on the day?
